Vertical Garden Tower DIY: Build your 2HPS!

2hps double helix planter stand

If you want to grow a continuous, substantial, and nutritious vegetable food supply in your backyard, you will have to go vertical.

The 2HPS (Double Helix Planter Stand) is our proposed standard for achieving your goal in an organized and practical way.

It optimizes plant space by giving 40% more soil per square foot than a garden bed.

It reduces work to just replacing the non-producing plants once a week (succession planting technique) by making them easy to spot in its 13-story planter arrangement.

That, by the way, matches the 13-week yearly quarter, the season length, and many vegetable growing cycles.

It eliminates the irrigation scheduling problem if you place your grow bags inside interconnected self-watering basins.

And finally, since suburban homesteading is about low cost,

We also explain the 2HPS garden tower DIY:

Construction materials:

We planned the 2HPS Double Helix Planter Stand, to be built easily and affordably.

A thirteen stories tower requires the following:

  • The 2HPS standard shelves are built with 12 2x6x48 inch fence quality wooden boards. 5-inch pairs of the same material are screwed to make the central lifting spacer.
  • The two cross-base logs are also built with 2x6x48-inch fence-quality wooden boards. 16 1/4-inch pairs of the same material are side-screwed to the 38-inch piece, leaving the central space to match the crossing partner.
  • 1 threaded zinc plated steel 1/2 inch rod, 2 feet long.
  • 1 threaded zinc plated steel 1/2 inch rod, 3 feet long.
  • 4 threaded zinc plated steel 1/4 inch rods, 2 feet long.
  • 4 threaded zinc plated steel 1/4 inch rod, 3 feet long.
  • 1/2 and 1/4 inch rod connectors, nuts and washers.

Assembly

  • Level the terrain and thread the two base shelves (cross supports) as in the pictures, having taken care of screwing the nut on the rod with its washer at the end bottom.
  • Thread the 2HPS shelves on a 30-degree pattern, taking care of screwing nuts and washers on the 1/4 inch rods when they trespass a shelve. As in the picture, the nuts tighten the structure and level the shelves. Use a level when tightening. The shelves can also be assembled on a 45-degree pattern to hold wider planters for shorter crops like beans or potatoes.
  • When you arrive at the 1/2 rod connector shelf, build one with a 1 1/8-inch central hole.
  • Keep threading the shelves, tightening and leveling the trespassed ones until finished. Then, tighten and level the tower with the cap board as in the picture.
